January 7th, 2011-
This morning we had a clinical experience in the local hospital. We split into small groups to follow different doctors. The doctors were very good at taking time to explain concepts that they know well. We focused on practicing how to assess tongues and how to read pulses. Some of the students had their tongues read by the doctor.
After lunch we headed on a bus with our translators and leaders, Ricky and Jeff , to the new TCM
campus. This is where most of the first 3 years of college occur, and then the students do clinicals where we are taking classes at the older campus near the hospitals. We were given a tour of a few rooms that the students use to practice TCM. One room had 3 areas inside to practice the inquiry step to gaining information about the patient. Another room had desks with a screen projector that students can learn from, along with fake tongues on a board to show the students examples. The students at TCM also have a room with fake arms that have pulses, kind of like our SIM arms in our lab at PLU. The last room has computers with software to help the students learn how to diagnosis patients by knowing their symptoms.
After this tour we had a surprise! The surprise was meeting nursing students from TCM. We got to spend time chatting with each other and learning about the other person's life. We were treated to dinner at their dining hall. Many of us were given Chinese names from our new friends. We hope to be able to stay in contact with them in the future.
