Today was the first day of our classes at TCM. Around 8:30 in the morning we were all taken into a conference room where we were welcomed by the President of the University as well as the head of the nursing department and several other important figures. They gave us the background of the TCM university and then we all took pictures together in front of a huge welcoming banner they had made for us. Everyone was very welcoming and seemed very excited to have us here.
After our welcoming we were given a tour of the teaching hospital associated with the university. We saw how people visit the doctor and also a huge pharmacy with over 500 herbs in stock. It was explained that people are usually seen weekly and given a weekly prescription that consists of an ever changing concoction of herbs depending on their needs determined during their assessment. After the tour we were split into two groups and allowed to follow a doctor who took us from patient to patient explaining things to us from the Chinese medicine point of view. It is very different from the western way of thinking!
After that we all went out to lunch together. It was amazing how many different dishes they kept bringing out! They definitely have some good food here in the Sichuan providence of China.
From lunch we had our first class learning some of the basic theories of traditional Chinese medicine. Some of the concepts discussed were similar to what we are taught in nursing, such as assessing the patient from a holistic point of view. Most of the lecture was spent introducing us to the Yin-Yang theory. We learned that one cannot exist without the other and that things are cyclically related.
After class and dinner we again met as a group for Taiji (Tai Chi). We watched two masters perform two separate styles and then selected which one we wanted to learn and broke into two groups. It is a lot harder than it looks! We had a great time though and many people are excited about practicing and getting better at Tai Chi during our time here.
All in all it was another long day but it was very exciting and full of fun experiences!
